A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January surged in the hours before former President Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from elections to political events.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
