Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of materials that contained little new information.
