Nigeria's remarkable new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has found itself in the middle of regional political struggles during the time it was scheduled to – but failed – to begin operations to the visitors for the very first time.

The Grand Vision

The large-scale complex stands in the center of the Edo state capital, capital of the southern area of Edo – and contains an excavation site and buildings designed by renowned British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, particularly noted for the National Museum of African American History and Culture that began operations in Washington DC in 2016.

It has been half a decade in the creation – and is planned to honor both the heritage and the present of artistic expression in the area known for the Benin Bronzes, cultural objects stolen from the royal palace by UK forces in the 1800s.

Setup and Prospects

It is remarkable – and ahead of the scheduled opening, Mowaa was buzzing with employees resolved to show it is a venue that can match renowned museums and galleries in the West.

Inside art restorers carefully revealed artworks from protective packaging, examining each piece and taking thorough documentation before placing them on exhibition areas and bases.

Technicians fine-tuned temperature regulation systems. In the materials science laboratory, staff members adjusted equipment meant to preserve ancient objects.

Funding and Economic Goals

The project has been the brainchild of businessman Phillip Ihenacho – now Mowaa's managing director.

"I hope us to have a substantial economic benefit on area populations in the vicinity," he told journalists, mentioning that he hoped to make Benin City "a tourism center."

Mowaa, a charitable Nigerian institution, aims at generating more than 30,000 work positions and adding over $80m per year to the local cultural industry through alliances and events.

National leader Bola Tinubu has even become involved to try and resolve the tensions, establishing a special task force to do some damage control.

Administrative Challenges

But how has this turned into so controversial – and such a PR disaster?

A great deal of it stems from internal conflicts at a area administrative level, as it was the former state leader Godwin Obaseki – whose administration ended the previous year – who was a primary advocate of the initiative.

And it looks like the government of the new governor, a strong supporter of the regional monarch, referred to as the traditional leader, may desire increased control in the project.
